Text Box: foliage in the summer, but turns red in the fall.  It bears small white flower clusters in May and makes an excellent addition to the garden.  Blachhaw Viburnum yields white flowers in May which become an edible fruit at harvest time, in the form of bluish-black berries.  They also have beautiful fall foliage that morphs from dark green to purple to reddish-bronze to crimson.  Other shrubs for great fall foliage include: Enkianthus, Oakleaf Hydrangea, Virginia Sweetspire, and Clethra.  Fall blooming shrubs include: Blue Mist Shrub, Scotch Heather, and Witch Hazel.  Shrubs with colorful fruits for fall include:  American Cranberry Bush, Linden Viburnum, and Red Chokeberry.  The addition of fall blooming perennials will complete the fall garden, such as: Autumn Crocus, Balloon Flower, Black-Eyed Susan, Joe Pye Weed, New Enlgand Aster, Phlox paniculata, Russian Sage, Showy Stonecrop, Tickseed, and Turtlehead.  Fall Color in the Landscape
You can establish spectacular and colorful seasonal appeal by selecting interesting combinations of shrubs and perennials for your fall garden.  Some selections bear colorful berries, others have colorful leaves, and some continue to have bright blooms.  Recommended shrubs that are sure to please include: Arrowwood Viburnum, Sumac, Fothergilla, Tor Spirea, and Blackhaw Viburnum.  Arrowwood Viburnum bears white flowers in spring.  In autumn this shrub displays attractive fall foliage, as well as clusters of bluish berries.  Sumac is another shrub with colorful leaves that provide fall colors ranging from red or maroon to gold.  Staghorn sumac(Rhus typhina) and smooth sumac(Rhus glabra) are excellent varieties for fall planting.  Fothergilla is a multi-stemmed shrub with white flowers in spring that are very fragrant.  In fall the dark green foliage changes to colors of yellow, orange, and scarlet.  This shrub should be planted in sun or part sun. Pyrus calleryana ‘Aristocrat’:  Aristocrat Flowering Pear – 40’ height.  Broad, pyramidal form, glossy green foliage, white flowers in May.  Beautiful fall color.

Fothergilla gardenii:  Dwarf Fothergilla – 3’ height.  Fragrant cream white flowers, blue green foliage in summer, brilliant orange red in fall.
Perennial of the Month:
